Matthew’s professional experience

Matthew combines the energy of an entrepreneur with the analytical mind of a scientist. His analytical skills were honed in his years leading highly complex projects with many moving parts. He orchestrated multi-site, multi-national and multi-vendor projects on technically disparate platforms in organisations with more than 100,000 users and operating in more than 100 countries.

During his 26-year career before founding Flywheel, Matthew was a lead enterprise IT architect and consultant to some of the world’s largest organisations in in banking, pharmaceuticals, government and retail.

He helped Swedish telecoms giant, Ericsson, build their internal cloud function with a standardised global hardware platform and a common infrastructure layer. In yearly assessments of the Kingdom of Saudi’s Ministry of the Interior, Matthew assessed their architecture function. His reports led to measurable improvement in production, speed and consistency of delivery as well as user satisfaction. He redesigned the IT and business strategy of a major London university in a programme lasting several years. His new, 160-person IT department delivered a new business strategy, saved over £8 million and revolutionised the IT systems.

At Infosys, Matthew spearheaded the Data Centre Transformation practice guiding a team of 87 architects and consultants across three continents. He led data centre migration and consolidation projects for numerous client companies. He completed a similar role at IBM. What does Matthew do when he’s not working?

I am a Great Britain Age Group long distance triathlete and I have placed 8th in World Championships. I am also a Mensa member, a parent and a marine fish keeper.

An Entrepreneur.

Managed Services Director

Martin Llewellyn

“People make the business.”

What does Martin do at Flywheel?

Martin is passionate about creating the right environment for every engineer in the company to deliver high-quality managed services to our customers.

What does Martin like about his work?

I enjoy a challenge. I like helping people grow and develop, seeing service improve and delivering what our customers need. All this rests on building the Flywheel culture so our people can perform and thrive.

Relevant qualifications

  1. Microsoft Certified – Azure, M365
  2. ITIL V4 Foundation
  3. DevOps Institute – Foundation & Leader
  4. AWS Cloud Practitioner

Relevant experience

Martin has spent 21 years working in IT, starting as a helpdesk technician in 2002 and working his way up to director level. He has worked for managed service providers for 10 years delivering to local government, blue light and commercial customers. Some of his other previous employers also include BT, and chemicals company Croda.

Something that makes Martin proud

I’m very proud of the way I built a team at BT during the pandemic.  I got the job in September and started to plan, building an org chart for the following fiscal year without being able to meet anyone in person. Getting the team to gel when they were all under lockdown across the country took ingenuity, and I’m proud of the way I used different communication methods and online activities during this time so that they grew into a highly successful and tight-knit team.

What Martin enjoys outside work

I am a taxi driver for my 11-year old son, who does a lot of sports! So I chauffeur him to football, cricket and hockey training and matches. The payback is watching the matches, as I’m his biggest supporter. My 8-year old daughter enjoys drama and choir so I have to work for her too, but she’s less labour-intensive!

Personally, I’m a season ticket holder for Rotherham United and I follow their matches at home and away. I also enjoy watching cricket and ice hockey.

Like most people, I enjoy reading and travel. I love Greece and often go there for the amazing food and the Mythos lager!

As a child, what did Martin want to be when he grew up?

I wanted to be a chef. I know how to use Gordon Ramsay’s special vocabulary, so clearly I have aptitude! I make a mean lasagne and I love Italian food generally. I’ve made a successful carbonara and occasionally cook for guests.

If you could give your 12-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?

In the words of Ted Lasso: “Believe”

Sales Director

Tim Glews

“Fortunes Truth! In this life, you don’t have to prove nothing, to nobody but yourself.”
Rudy (1993)

What Tim does at Flywheel IT Services and Colwyn Technologies

My main role is to deliver excellent customer service across all our business and education customers.

Relevant Experience

Tim has particularly strong technical experience in telecoms, CRM systems and Microsoft Office.

Tim has worked as a sales manager for IT and tech-related companies since 1999, including Dixons Group and more recently, Reach Digital Telecoms.

“When I was 12 years old, I demonstrated natural sales skills. I took advantage of my precocious facial hair to buy cigarettes and sell them on individually to my classmates for a 1200% profit margin. I already understood the need for adding value as a middleman, since I included a free match with every fag!”

One thing Tim is proud of

I won ‘Best DJ in Scotland’ in 2003! Out of 250 disc jockeys I was voted number one by venues offering live entertainment. It taught me that if you are willing to work really hard for something you want, you can get it.

Who are you are outside work?

First and foremost, I’m a dad. I have two sons still in primary school and pre-school age.

I am also massive carp angler! I go fishing all around the UK. My older son is turning out to be a natural, so we often go on fishing for days together, hunting the biggest carp we can find.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a fireman, up until I was 19 and was told my eyesight wasn’t good enough.

If you could give your 12-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Tesla. Google. Microsoft. Put every penny you can get on these stocks!

Something that makes Jonathan feel proud

I worked on a two-phase block replacement Secondary School project, delivered during the first COVID-19 lockdown. While thinking around the challenges of social distancing and a reduced workforce, I planned the successful handover of the new building with all ICT equipment installed and working ready for the return of staff and students. The decant of the school’s existing server infrastructure was the most challenging element as this involved teams working closely together in a time where PPE was scarce, but with careful planning and an innovative approach using team from the same family unit, equipment was migrated, whilst adhering to Government guidance. I ensured coordinated communication with all parties throughout to enable them to successfully complete the school on time.
